1 Sprint 2 Focus: Level Design

Quick recap: In Sprint 1 you refined your character designs and started your portfolio presentation. Great work!

Sprint 2 = Level Design. Today you will review and improve your game world and level designs, then add them to your portfolio.

Start by looking back at your previous work:

Find: Your L05 Game World design (background/environment)
Find: Your L12 Complete Level design (level with game pieces placed)

Now write 3 goals for this sprint:

Goal 1
Write your first goal here...
Goal 2
Write your second goal here...
Goal 3
Write your third goal here...
Goal 1 — completed
Goal 2 — completed
Goal 3 — completed

2 Refine Your Game World

You have 25 minutes for this section. Open your L05 or L12 design and improve it:

Improve: Add more detail to the background. Think about sky, ground textures, distant objects, scenery.
Improve: Make platforms look more interesting (texture, shading). Instead of plain rectangles, add grass, stone, metal, or wood textures.
Place: Game pieces (from L10) in strategic locations. Put collectibles where players need to jump to reach them. Put enemies in tricky spots.
Add: Environmental details — lighting effects, weather, small details. Glowing torches, rain drops, floating particles, clouds, stars.
Check: Make sure the player path is clear and fun. Can you trace a path from start to finish? Is it obvious where to go?
Not sure how to improve your level? Search Canva for "game background" or "platform game" for inspiration. Look at how real games use colour and detail.

3 Create a Level Walkthrough

You have 20 minutes for this section. You will show HOW someone would play through your level.

Step 1: Duplicate your level design — press Ctrl + D in Canva, or create a copy. You now have two copies — one clean level, one for the walkthrough.
Step 2: On the copy, draw a numbered path showing the player's journey. Use arrows, numbers, and labels to show each step.

Your walkthrough should show steps like:

1. Start here (show the spawn point)
2. Jump to first platform
3. Collect coins
4. Avoid enemy
5. Reach the finish
Step 3: Use arrows and numbers to make the path clear. In Canva: Elements → Lines & Shapes → choose an arrow.
Step 4: Rename: "L18 - Level Walkthrough - [Your Name]" Click the title at the top of Canva to rename.
Show your walkthrough to your partner. Can they understand the path without you explaining it? If not, add more labels or arrows.

4 Add to Portfolio

Open your portfolio presentation from Sprint 1 and add these new pages:

Page 3: "My Game World" Paste your game world background design. Write 1-2 sentences describing the setting.
Page 4: "My Level Design" Paste the complete level with all game pieces placed. Describe the layout.
Page 5: "Level Walkthrough" Paste the walkthrough with the numbered path showing how to play through the level.
Share your portfolio with your partner. Ask them: "Does my level look fun to play? Is the walkthrough easy to follow?"

Quick check — your portfolio should now have 5 pages:

Page 1: Cover page
Page 2: My Characters
Page 3: My Game World
Page 4: My Level Design
Page 5: Level Walkthrough
