🎯 Learning intentions
- I can calculate how many popsicle sticks my design will use.
- I can write a WHS risk assessment for scissors, glue gun, and load testing.
- I can plan which parts of the build happen in which lesson (L11–L18).
✅ Success criteria
- My folio has a materials list with stick count, glue quantity, and masking tape.
- My folio has a WHS risk table with 4+ hazards, controls, and risk ratings.
- My folio has a build schedule — which lesson does which stage.
Do Now · 5 min
Count the members on your plan + elevation drawing from L08. Quick estimate:
- How many popsicle sticks for top + bottom chords? ___
- How many for verticals? ___
- How many for diagonals? ___
- Double it (you have TWO trusses + deck): ___
I Do · ~10 min Teacher demonstration
Teacher models a materials list using the exemplar bridge:
MATERIALS LIST — Bridge It (Team Bradfield)
Popsicle sticks (full length 114 mm) × 90
Popsicle sticks (cut to 60 mm) × 24
Popsicle sticks (cut to 40 mm diagonals) × 32
PVA wood glue 150 g
Hot glue sticks 3 × 7 mm
Masking tape (temp clamping) 1 m
TOTAL STICKS ~146 (add 20% contingency = 175)
Then a WHS risk table. Teacher introduces the risk matrix: Likelihood × Consequence = Risk Level.
HAZARD LIKELIHOOD CONSEQUENCE RISK CONTROL
Scissor cut Medium Low Low Cut away from body, pass handle-first
Hot glue burn Medium Medium Med Teacher-supervised only, cool-down mat
PVA in eyes Low Low Low Wash hands, cap bottles
Bridge failure hits student Low Low Low 1 m exclusion zone during load test
We Do · ~15 min Guided practice
Together we plan a build schedule:
- L11 — WHS briefing + lay out + glue first base chord
- L12 — complete base chord + cut verticals
- L13 — glue diagonals (triangulation lesson)
- L14 — mirror truss (second side)
- L15 — deck
- L16 — peer review + one improvement
- L17 — reinforcement
- L18 — finishing
You Do · ~35 min Independent pair work
Complete Part A of your folio (30 min).
- Write your MATERIALS LIST with quantities and total stick count.
- Write your WHS RISK TABLE — minimum 4 hazards, controls, risk levels before & after.
- Write your BUILD SCHEDULE — which build stage in which lesson.
- Check your whole folio against the Part A checklist (on hub). Tick each row.
- Save to Google Classroom draft folder — FORMATIVE CHECK-IN with Ms Gao (she'll mark up and return before Part A due date).
Differentiation
🪜Support
Partially pre-filled templates for materials list and WHS table. Teacher-checked build schedule provided.
🎯Core
Complete all three sections from scratch using templates.
🚀Extension
Add a cost-per-bridge calculation. Include contingency for broken members (estimate 15%). Add a 'what if?' row for one unexpected risk.
Exit Ticket · 5 min
- Total stick count for your bridge?
- Most serious WHS risk in your build?
- Which lesson is your build SCHEDULED to finish?
