T1-L15: 3D Shapes, Nets & Freehand Sketching

Year 7 Technology Mandatory — Engineering Technologies & Systems — Bridge It
pp. 73–78
Outcomes: TE4-DES-01 TE4-MSC-01 Folio pp. 73–78
Learning Intention
We are learning to identify, construct and sketch 3D geometric shapes.
Success Criteria
  • I can name at least 6 geometric shapes
  • I can construct 3D shapes from 2D nets
  • I can sketch 3D shapes from observation
  • I can add shading and shadows to my drawings
Do Now
What 3D shape is a Toblerone box?
#QuestionYour answer
1What shape is a Toblerone box?
2How many faces does it have?
3Another everyday object that is the same shape?
📚
Key Vocabulary

Standard: Fill in the definition.  |  Support: Definitions shown in grey — read and copy into your folio.  |  Extension: Use each term in a sentence.

TermDefinitionUse in a sentence (Extension)
Net A flat 2D pattern that folds up to make a 3D shape
Development Another word for net, used in technical drawing
Prism A 3D shape with the same cross-section along its length
Pyramid A 3D shape with a polygonal base and triangular sides meeting at an apex
Cylinder A 3D shape with 2 circular faces and 1 curved surface
Cone A 3D shape with 1 circular base and a curved surface rising to a point
Sphere A perfectly round 3D shape with no flat faces, edges or vertices
Tetrahedron A 3D shape made of 4 triangular faces — the strongest per unit of material
Shading Using light and dark tones to create the illusion of 3D form
📐
Name the Shapes (Folio pp. 73–74)

Complete the table for each 3D shape. Count faces, edges, and vertices carefully.

Construct from Nets (Folio pp. 75–76)
⚠ Safety reminder: Scissors — cut away from your body. Glue sticks only (no liquid glue).

Construction checklist:

#StepDone? (✓)
1Cut along solid lines only
2Fold along dotted lines
3Apply glue to tabs
4Hold each join for 10 seconds

Which shapes did you construct? Draw the net in your folio.

Sketch 1 — Outline & Proportion (Folio p. 77)

Arrange 3 shapes on your desk and sketch them in your folio. Follow these guidelines:

  1. Start with the largest shape
  2. Lightly sketch the outline first
  3. Check proportions — is each shape the right size compared to the others?
  4. Label each shape
  5. DO NOT shade yet

Self-check:

QuestionYour answer
Are the shapes roughly the right size compared to each other?
Did you use light pencil lines?
Are all shapes labelled?
🎨
Sketch 2 — Add Shading (Folio p. 77)

Now add shading to your sketch. Follow these steps:

#StepYour notes
1Identify the light source direction
2Highlight (lightest area)
3Mid-tone (medium shading)
4Shadow (darkest area)
5Cast shadow on the desk surface

Self-rate your shading (1–5):

🎨
Sketch 3 — Add Colour (Folio p. 78)

Use coloured pencils to add colour to your sketch. Remember shading rules still apply!

#TechniqueDid you use it? Notes
1Press lightly for highlights
2Press firmly for shadows
3Layer colours for richness
4Follow the same light source direction
🔵 Support — Shapes & Sketching Help

Use these tips:

  1. Shape name reference card with images is available
  2. Pre-fold nets are available for fine motor difficulties
  3. Focus on 3 simpler shapes: cube, cylinder, triangular prism
  4. Use the shading reference chart (highlight → mid-tone → shadow)
  5. Tracing is allowed for outlines

🟠 Extension — Advanced Sketching & Shapes

Multiple viewpoints: Sketch the same arrangement from a different angle (bird’s eye or worm’s eye view).

Cross-hatching: Try using cross-hatching technique instead of smooth shading. What effect does it create?

Custom net: Design your own net for a custom 3D shape. Describe or draw it below.

Challenge: Research and attempt to draw a complex polyhedron (dodecahedron or icosahedron). How many faces does it have?

🎫
Exit Ticket — Reflection
1. Name 3 differences between a prism and a pyramid.
2. What are the 4 tonal areas used in shading?
3. Rate your best sketch today out of 5 and explain why.
